Crystal Dynamics announced over the weekend that 2013’s Tomb Raider has gone on to sell more than 8.5 million copies, making it the most successful game in the entire series.
The record has set the bar high for its sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider, which is due out later this year.
“Tomb Raider ignited and expanded the fan base, pushing the series to a new level. The game’s incredible sales success reflects the passionate response of players,” Darrell Gallagher, head of studio at Crystal Dynamics said in a press release. “Our studio is proud of what we accomplished with the game.”
Good news for Square Enix who, shortly after its release, announced “extraordinary loss” in the 2013 financial year, leading to president Yoichi Wada’s resignation. The success of the Tomb Raider franchise, largely in Europe and North America, hopefully marks a return to form for the publisher.
To celebrate the record, the team’s posted a clutch of concept art of the Tomb Raider reboot.
