Now is a very good time to be a fan of classic-style RPGs. In recent years we’ve had Divinity: Original Sin, Tyranny, Pillars of Eternity, and Torment: Tides of Numenera. Now there’s another RPG looking to shoulder those celebrated titles and it’s called Tower of Time.
Tower of Time brings its own particular angle to the reinvention of the classic RPG. Rather than focusing on storytelling like some of those aforementioned titles, Tower of Time instead throws everything it has as real-time combat – so much so, in fact, that its developers claim to combine RTS and RPG combat on a small scale, giving you the ability to slow time at will in order to make all the necessary decisions.
Currently, Tower of Time is on Steam Early Access, and offers around 15 hours of challenging play to get through (not including the optional battles), but many more battlefields, puzzles, and storylines are on the way to increase the hours. Even then, the game offers multiple difficulties – including Hard and Epic – that will keep even veterans of the RPG format busy for a lot longer. You’ll really need to plan out your tactics and do your best to execute them to make it through.
