Battle royale mode: “you will see Ubisoft taking those ideas in our games”

It’s no surprise Ubisoft is taking notice of battle royale mode – everyone in the world is. Fortnite is a phenomenon, and it appears that the mode can be adapted to fit into most game genres with enough ingenuity.

When asked about what he thought of the emerging genre in a post-show segment on the YouTube Gaming Show, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said, “you will see Ubisoft taking those ideas in our games.”

He wouldn’t be drawn on which of Ubisoft’s franchises would have its DNA spliced with a battle royale, or whether it would be a whole new franchise entirely but he said, “we love what [battle royale games] have been able to achieve. The fact you can play with your friend and have a different type of strategy, a different type of gameplay is something we love.”

Battle royale modes are turning up all over the shop, to the point it’s becoming a bit of a joke. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 has one coming in Blackout, Battlefield V had one announced on stage at EA Play, there were three separate battle royales at the PC Gaming Show.

If Ubisoft was to fit one of its existing games or franchises into there are a few obvious candidates. Ghost Recon Wildlands already has the scale, the vehicles, and the weapon variety to be moulded into a battle royale.

But if we’re thinking which of Ubi’s franchises would make the biggest splash as a battle royale, I think it would have to be the Rabbids. They’re just the sort to spend a day blasting each other into a pulp for the fun of it. And, after Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, we know they have the arsenal.
