World of Warcraft’s beloved meme has become self-aware

Zekhan, who captured the community's hearts at the Siege of Lordaeron, has learned what memes are

World of Warcraft

It’s been a wild ride, but the Battle for Azeroth seems to be drawing towards its finale. World of Warcraft’s current expansion has been underwritten by betrayal, genocide, and some extremely difficult raid bosses, but its silver lining has been the arrival of a new fan-favourite character.

Zekhan is a jungle troll shaman who first showed up to offer moral (and magical) support to Varok Saurfang at the Siege of Lordaeron. His antics there in that battle made him something of an overnight celebrity, and earned him the affectionate nickname of ‘Zappyboi’. The trouble is, he now appears to have become self-aware.

World of Warcraft’s latest patch introduced a bunch of voice lines for the character (as spotted by Icy Veins), which he’ll spout if you talk to him in his new spot in the Orc city of Orgrimmar. As well as some greetings and various other pleasantries, one voice line reads “the other trolls say I become something called a me-me. Can anybody tell me what dat means?”

Inappropriate pronunciation aside, it’s an amusing little easter egg from Blizzard, and is followed up by another, similar line: “Me don’t steal scenes on purpose, man, de loa just made me dat way.”

Blizzard maintains that it was originally surprised by Zekhan’s popularity, but it looks like he’s probably here to stay. For one thing, he’s become an ever-increasing presence in some pretty important cutscenes, but more importantly, I’m not sure the community would forgive the devs if he was somehow written out.
