Alone in the Dark x-ray puzzle solution

Alone in the Dark is all about going inside the mind of its characters, so of course there's a puzzle involving the x-ray of a brain.

How do you solve the x-ray puzzle in Alone in the Dark? Alone in the Dark takes place in Derceto Manor, a “home for the mentally fatigued”. It’s only natural, then, that there’s a lot of therapy talk and medical references –  and the classic x-ray puzzle.

Down in the rather disturbing hospital basement of the Alone in the Dark manor, you must put the pieces of an x-ray together to receive part of a statue to be used in a later puzzle. You don’t actually use the x-ray itself, and I’m not entirely sure how it magically conjures up a physical item, but those are questions best left unasked in the survival game. One that is worth asking, though, is just how to solve this Alone in the Dark x-ray puzzle.

How to solve the Alone in the Dark xray puzzle

The three x-ray parts you need to use are the two you found, and the one on the far right of the board – the other two are red herrings. Place the labelled x-ray in the bottom slot, the left-hand image on the left, and the right-hand x-ray on the right. Rotate the images until they form a full image.

Rotate the bottom image until the label and white edge are along the bottom of the screen. Luckily, the precise angle doesn’t matter, as long as the images all connect. So, as you rotate the left and right images, ensuring that the white edges are along the left and right respectively, just ensure the outer edges of the brain scan line up – the images do overlap. Once they’re close enough, the game automatically takes over to complete the puzzle. As long as you still have control, something’s not quite right.

Completing this Alone in the Dark x-ray puzzle gives you a crucial item to continuing the story – even if it doesn’t make a lot of sense how or why they’re related. We talk a bit more about these gratuitous puzzles in our Alone in the Dark review, but if they’re your favorite part about the horror game, then don’t forget to pick all of the Alone in the Dark Lagniappes, too.
