Good news, horror fans: two of the genre’s biggest modern classics are currently free on Steam, ready to be claimed and become permanent additions to your library. You can now get the Amnesia Collection free for a limited time.

Just head over to the Steam page to add the games to your library. That’s easy enough, but then you’ll have to work up the courage to install, launch, and play them in a darkened room with headphones, which may be the greater challenge in all this.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent comes from Frictional Games, and its atmospheric, combat-lite take on first-person horror defined what’s pretty much become a new genre. You can draw a line from Amnesia through many imitators all the way up to bits of Resident Evil 7, but few games have done it as well as this one.
Frictional partnered with Dear Esther and Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture devs The Chinese Room for the follow-up, A Machine for Pigs. The developers continue to promise the game “will bury its snout into your ribs and it will eat your heart,” which may or may not be what you’re looking for from digital horror.
No word on how long the promotion will last, so grab it while you can. Either way, you may need to sleep with one eye open tonight.
