Valve reveals Steam’s best sellers of 2018

Valve has announced the best-selling games on Steam for the year so far, and there are one or two surprises among the usual suspects.

In the Platinum category we have a few games that have stuck to the Steam top sellers list like glue since the day they were released, like Grand Theft Auto, Counter-Strike, and PUBG.

But it’s not all familiar faces. Games that we haven’t seen before, like last month’s release Jurassic World: Evolution, have made it into the Platinum club. So too has Vermintide II, which definitely pleases the Warhammer fans in the office.

Like free games? We do too. We’ve devised a list of some of the best free steam games for your viewing pleasure.

You can check out the full list of Steam’s top sellers here. But sadly, you’re a bit too late to pick them up in the Steam Summer Sale.

In the Gold category we see CD Projekt Red’s golden child, The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, along with Ark: Survival Evolved, and Elder Scrolls: Online – likely propelled by its latest expansion, Summerset, which released last month. A surprising result for MMORPG Black Desert Online too after receiving mixed reviews on Steam. Proving that fighting games still pack a punch, Dragon Ball FighterZ rests in Gold among good company.

There’s nothing too surprising in Silver, though we see the return of some single-player games such as Fallout 4, Nier: Automata and Dark Souls III (if you’re tempted for a challenge) as well as survival horror Dying Light.

Exactly how these rankings translate into actual number remains unclear, and Valve has made efforts to prevent third-party Steam sales estimates – or, at least, the company hasn’t cared when its API changes affect such trackers. Valve does like to publish these ranking lists every so often, though, so we may be able to see how these games continue to fare against each other later in the year.
