Civ 6 players are building Wonders in-game while visiting them in real life

Civilization players have been pouring an excessive amount of time and resources into building in-game Wonders for years. Now, however, thanks to the Wonder of technology (see what I did there?) a few of them are taking their projects to the next step.

Civ 6 launched on iOS back in December 2017, allowing players to achieve all four of their Xs on the go without getting in any legal trouble. While plenty have taken the opportunity to enjoy Firaxis’ strategy outings on the go, a handful of dedicated players have taken their commitment up a level. In a very Inception-y way, they’re using the mobile version of the game to build in-game Wonders at their real-life locations.

The practice seems to date back about eight months or so, when a couple of players used their trips to Rome’s Colosseum and the Dalai Lama’s Potala Palace in Tibet to build virtual versions of the buildings in front of them. Since then, more players have followed suit, recreating Wonders across the world.

China is undoubtedly the most popular tourist spot, with the Terracotta Army, the Great Wall, and the Forbidden City all featuring, with a virtual Wonder in the foreground and its counterpart in the background.

Elsewhere, players have undertaken building projects at Stonehenge and Mexico’s Chichen Itza. My personal favourite, however, comes from that original Colosseum post, in which a player built the Roman amphitheatre in the correct spot on his in-game map while standing across the road from the real thing.

There are obviously plenty of wonders left for players to uncover, but the ultimate prize must be the International Space Station. It’s not technically a Wonder in Civ 6, but it is a Scored Competition, and I think I’d be prepared to gloss over the technicalities in that particularly situation.
