Update, September 25: Original Sin 2 is climbing to even greater heights, blowing past even developer Larian's expectations with 600,000 sold in less than two weeks.
We love Divinity: Original Sin 2, and it seems we’re not alone. The game has been tremendously successful already, and it’s still putting up some impressive numbers - especially when consider that it’s essentially a throwback to an old-school style of RPGs that a bigger publisher might call “niche.”
“We expected at best 500k by X-mas but we're now at a total of 600k, less than 2 weeks after release,” Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke tells us. “That's incredible and a lot more than we had for D:OS 1. That one took 3 months I think to get to 500k.”
It’s a golden age for RPGs on Steam, both old-school and new. Here’s some of the best and brightest.
Original Sin 2 has also seen its peak concurrent users at just over 93k according to SteamDB, putting it in the top 30 of all time concurrent users on Steam. That’s only two weeks in on a game whose success has been driven largely by positive word of mouth.
Update, September 18: Divinity: Original Sin 2 continues to succeed, jumping to nearly 500,000 copies sold over the weekend.
Divinity: Original Sin 2’s release has begun incredibly strongly, with Larian’s old-school RPG racing to just under half a million copies in just four days. For comparison, the first Divinity game didn’t hit those numbers until at least a couple of months after release.
Numbers that high (the game peaked at just under 86,000 concurrent players) have meant that Larian’s servers have struggled a little to keep up with demand, but in an interview with Eurogamer, Larian’s owner Swen Vincke says they should be “up and running again soon.”
The first patch for Divinity: Original Sin 2 is due later this week.
Original story, September 17: It seems that records are being broken all over the world of PC gaming as of late, and no industry analyst could have predicted who’d be breaking them. Today’s trailblazers are Larian Studios - the independent and crowdfunded Belgian crew - who have every reason to celebrate this weekend as Divinity: Original Sin 2 saw one of the strongest launches of any classic RPG on Steam.
While sales figures from SteamSpy are always to be taken with a liberal pinch of seasoning, it’s safe enough to say that approximately 300,000 people own the game on Steam, although many (43k, give or take) are Kickstarter backers. What is a more relevant metric of launch success is concurrent players, and the game clocked in at just over 75,000 players last night. While dwarfed by competitive juggernauts such as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, that still placed it as the 4th most active game on Steam at the time.
To put that figure into further perspective, the original Divinity: Original Sin - a respectable succeess - saw just under 22k players peak at launch, and even Obsidian’s old-school hit Pillars of Eternity saw under 42k at its best. In short, Original Sin 2 has seen one of the most successful launches of any old-school RPG on Steam. If not the top record holder, then it’s definitely in the top three. A fully deserved position.
Let’s also not forget that Steam isn’t the entire picture. Original Sin 2 also saw a DRM-free release via GOG, which surely bumps up the figures by another few thousand. While I’m not sure of the exact metrics GOG uses the fill its Popular Games ranking on the store front page, Original Sin 2’s multiple editions take up 4 of the top 10 slots.
It’s a heartening turn of events, given Larian’s history of financial struggles and publisher mismanagement. Now fully independent, they’ve found their groove, discovered their true market and are proudly showing the rest of the industry how it’s done. It doesn’t hurt that Original Sin 2 is a lovely game that our writers can’t stop gushing about. Check out our review-in-progress here, with the final cut due on Tuesday.
