Gods & Monsters sounds like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Zelda rolled into one

A new IP from Ubisoft has been unveiled at E3

Gods & Monsters is a new game from the Assassin’s Creed Odyssey devs. The new title features a super-cute art style, exploring classic mythology, and is set to release on February 25, 2020 for PC, consoles, and Stadia, and it will be available on day one through Uplay Plus. We only got to see a cinematic trailer at the Ubisoft press conference, but a few gameplay details are starting to come in – and it sounds more than a little like a constant Nintendo favourite.

You’ll be taking on quests, delving into dungeons, and solving puzzles as you do battle against Greek mythology’s most notable monsters. Your hero is named Fenyx, seeking to restore the Greek gods to their place on Mt. Olympus. The ultimate baddie is Typhon, and you’ll have to head through a whole army of mythic beasts to accomplish your quest.

An early preview suggests you’ll have a custom character who can wield a bow, earn supernatural powers, and has a Zelda: Breath of the Wild stamina meter. Creative director Jonathan Dumont tells Kotaku that “it’s flattering that we can be compared to that, but from a storytelling point of view it’s going to be a very unique adventure.”

But in contrast to Zelda, Durmont says the ability progression and scope of the game are inspired more by Assassin’s Creed Odyssey than Zelda.

However, your path through the game will be limited by the need to earn new traversal abilities – something you’re rarely challenged by in an Assassin’s Creed game.

The Watch Dogs Legion release date – and all the new gameplay details along with it – was probably the most notable news out of the Ubisoft press conference this year, but Gods & Monsters served as the publisher’s usual show-closer. Since it’s out in less than a year, here’s hoping we see more gameplay soon.
