Torchlight 2 sold over a million copies last year

When upon Torchlight 2’s launch, Runic said their servers were taking a battering under “unprecedented demand”, we added another fistful of salt to our 2012 action RPG buffet. Did “unprecedented” simply mean “better than Torchlight 1’s launch”? Well, yes. But significantly better, as it turns out.

“We had an amazing 2012, and [are] proud to say that #Torchlight2 has sold over 1 million units!,” tweeted developers Runic games early this week. “Thank you!”

Torchlight 2 was released in September last year. The original Torchlight was released in January 2010, and didn’t break the 1 million sales barrier until July 2011. By sobering contrast, Diablo 3 sold 3.5 million copies in its first day alone. But, y’know. Blizzard.

A prominent entry in the last days of the Steam Winter Sale can’t have hurt Torchlight 2’s prospects for the new year. Have you picked it up yet?

Thanks, PC Gamer.
