Killer Instinct on Steam will support cross-play, allowing PC players to play with PC players

Killer Instinct hit PC in March of last year, and if you didn’t know that then, don’t worry, there’s a very good reason for that: it only hit the Windows 10 store. A Steam release was recently announced, and today it was confirmed that all versions of the game would have cross-play. Xbox One, Windows 10, and Steam players can all be one happy family.

Yes, Microsoft’s networks apparently draw a distinction between players on Steam and Windows 10, making cross-play on PC some kind of special feature. That’s only really significant because, as part of testing, cross-play will occasionally be off, limiting you to only joining Steam or Microsoft networks. Otherwise, both networks and all three platforms will be agnostic toward one another.

The exact release date for Killer Instinct on Steam is still up in the air, but it’s expected to be this year.

Microsoft are largely focused on releasing their games for the Windows Store, but a slow drip of content has been making its way to Steam. Quantum Break released there in 2016, and Halo Wars: Definitive Edition hit both storefronts day-and-date when it was untethered from its sequel. But given the lengthy time between those releases, I’d recommend against holding your breath for a timely Steam edition of the next Forza or Crackdown.
