Free games: win a Steam key for spooky Metroidvania Mable and the Wood

The colourful indie stars a little girl who can't lift a sword, but can take the form of a spider

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: a fantasy world doomed to oblivion, a prophesied chosen one returned from the dead, a massive magic sword. So far, so clichéd, but now suppose that the returned chosen one is a little girl who can’t even lift said sword. That’s the refreshing premise of Mable and the Wood.

Mable and the Wood is a classic side-scrolling Metroidvania, in that gaining new abilities is key to advancement. These abilities are unlocked by killing bestial bosses and taking their forms – kill a spider boss to fling webs, enabling you to scale walls like a literal spider-girl, for instance.

But how to do so when you can’t even swing your sword? Mable starts with fairy form unlocked: she attacks by leaving her sword in the ground, fluttering over enemies, and then calling her sword back to her hands, slashing anything in the way. The cult that resurrected you will recommend that you do a lot of this, as they believe that taking the great beasts’ power is key to saving the world, but you don’t have to listen to them – pacifists can complete the game without killing anything, and discover a number of alternate endings.
