Massively multiplayer online games, or MMOs for short, occupy a very unique space in the gaming world. These are games with hundreds of thousands of players every day, building communities within communities, talking in what can seem like an alien language about AoE, DPS, mobs, and more.
These communities are often very welcoming to new players, and beautiful moments can arise when groups band together to create their own stories in a world. But for newcomers to the genre, it can be a challenge to get to grips with these new terms and the often combat-heavy gameplay that comes with it.
But Amazon Games' New World is a different beast. Not only is it an entirely new world, with plenty of mysteries and secrets for new players to uncover, but it has a variety of ways to play which can ease you into the game without having to get stuck into large-scale PvP battles or epic quest lines.
With New World now available worldwide, we’re looking at all the ways a newcomer can feel comfortable diving into the land of Aeternum and all the aspects of the game they can look forward to – all without needing to be an MMO aficionado.
A whole New World
Nobody likes to join a story halfway through. With New World, there’s a rich history to uncover, but the real story is just beginning. Aeternum is a vast, largely unexplored land with mysteries to solve about its history and lore, and by joining in now, you’ll be a part of the first group of adventurers working to uncover these secrets.
And you really will be a part of a starting group. While there have been beta tests throughout 2021, the New World you’ll play at launch has been reset, and everyone will be starting off on the same footing. Your fellow players will be in the same boat as you, gathering resources to craft new equipment, tackling early quests, and getting to grips with the world around them. And if you need to team up with other players to take on a harder quest, you can rest assured that you’ll find willing participants at the same level as you with ease.
Give peace a chance
Combat in New World is different to many other MMOs, but even if you’re not a fan of swinging a sword about, there’s plenty to keep you entertained. You can harvest resources across Aeternum to craft gear before selling it on at a trading post, go fishing in any available body of water, or cook up a storm at your campfire or in a kitchen if you’d prefer to avoid getting stuck into a fight.
The best part is that, even if you focus on non-violent activities in Aeternum, you can still be a powerful warrior when the time comes. Every task, no matter how small, gives you some experience points, which can be used to improve your stats and make you just as strong as a player who’s been smashing Ancients to pieces with a warhammer. Better yet, you’ll also be improving your other skills, unlocking recipes and resources other players may not have access to, which could very well make you an invaluable member of a party when you decide to go dungeon diving.
If crafting for others isn’t your jam, then there’s plenty you can make for yourself. And if you need somewhere to display all your fine wares, New World has homes aplenty for you to buy and kit out however you please. With all sorts of furniture to craft, you can make the beautiful home of your dreams, all without exploring a single dungeon.
Or if settling down in one place isn’t enough, you could take a camping tour of Aeternum. Gather resources for a camp, find a spot on the map, and set off walking. New World is full of gorgeous vistas and lush greenery – as well as the odd fiery wasteland and murky swamp, of course. Who knows what you’ll find if you go a-wandering across the plains?
Whatever you choose to do, New World is home to plenty of activities for any level of MMO fan. Be sure to pick up New World on PC today and discover what Aeternum has to offer for would-be adventurers!
