Ni no Kuni II wasn’t shaped by the artistic excellence of Studio Ghibli like the first game was, but it’s one of the most beautiful PC games to come out this year – easily.
The JRPG boasts a world that will please any anime fan. You can run through across its green meadows, sky pirates stalking you across the blue sky, the sun slapping its rays across the brow of your hero, the child king Evan Pettiwhisker Tildrum (yes, that’s his actual name). And spending nights taking photos of the bright lights of the game’s casino towns is a great way to take a breather from the action.
But Ni no Kuni II special for reasons beyond its visuals: the cute Higgledies that add an extra tactical layer to the real-time battles, besting the puzzle board of the Kingmaker Trials, and the long but rewarding process of rebuilding an entire kingdom. It’s a JRPG epic alright, and one that we’ve spent many hours inside, never wanting to leave.
