OverwolfWorld of Warcraft

Overwolf, the guild for in-game creators, has released a new tool for modding creators to use for games like Minecraft, World of Warcraft, and more – the CurseForge API. This unique piece of software allows creators to distribute their mods directly to their audience. It also adds a whole load more possibilities for gaming communities to share content online.

This new system will allow creators more control over their work, especially when it comes to third-party distribution of their creations. Authors can now give consent over whether they want to allow distribution outside of the CurseForge system, allowing them control on how their content is distributed and to protect the monetisation of their mods via the Authors Rewards Points system.

It’s not just modders who can use the CurseForge API to their advantage. The new terms of service agreement opens up the possibilities for users who can use the system, bringing gaming community projects like Discord bots, mod managers, and more into the fold, allowing the system to grow and support gamers in different ways.

CurseForge API already has 217 approved applications including 90 mod managers, 42 bots, 25 analytics tools, 39 server-related tools, nine general modding tools, and 11 modpack creation tools. This roster is, of course, set to grow exponentially, as more users become familiar with the product. If you wish to apply to use the platform, you can do so here.

Power to the players

So what does this mean for players? Overwolf has listened to requests from fans for a leaner way to manage mods, and developed a standalone version of the CurseForge application strictly for the players. The Windows standalone version, which is currently in alpha, is based on Electron, and allows players to download and manage add-ons, mods, and more all in one convenient place. The current alpha version of the standalone client supports World of Warcraft, with plans to add support for Minecraft and other games soon.

Linux users can download an alpha version of the app for their operating system, which currently only supports World of Warcraft. This version is in its early stages, so expect changes and improvements to come in the near future. If you have questions or feedback, be sure to join the CurseForge Discord server and share your thoughts.

The app has many great benefits for players and creators alike. It has an attractive and streamlined layout, allowing you to keep all of your mods and add-ons in one convenient location. Mod authors get 70% of the app’s revenue, making it an excellent way to support creators, whether players use the free version of the app or the subscription-based ad-free version.

Modding delights

And there’s never been a better time to get into modding your games. There are hundreds of mods available on the CurseForge API to add new dimensions to your games, from graphical improvements to entirely new gameplay concepts. One of the most popular Minecraft mods on CurseForge is RLCraft, a modpack designed to bring a hardcore semi-realism survival challenge element to the game.

Elsewhere, there’s the Pixelmon Mod, which transforms Minecraft into a Pokemon-style, monster-catching experience. Using a combination of user-created mods, this pack adds capture, battling, and more. Can’t be bothered to sift through the many available mods to decide which one you want to use? Download All the Mods 6, which adds a huge number of the most popular mods to the game, including hundreds of creative items for you to play with.

Ready to start your CurseForge journey? Download the Windows Client here. Fancy becoming a creator? Register here. You can also check out the official roadmap for updates and changes to come, and sign up for monthly newsletters to stay on top of the latest changes. To discuss CurseForge with other users, don’t forget to join the Discord server. Good luck, and happy modding!
