If you want to mark a single game as the one responsible for the modern rise of indie roguelite platform games, you’re probably looking at Rogue Legacy. Developer Cellar Door Games has been quiet about a potential follow-up, until yesterday, when they tweeted an image of the number two amid a feast of April Fools gaming jokes. But this wasn’t a joke – today, the studio has confirmed that Rogue Legacy 2 is on the way.
“Yes, it’s official,” the devs say on Twitter. “Rogue Legacy 2 is in development! We’ll be releasing a lot more info in the coming days.” The three second video announcing the game features a familiar-looking knight, who turns toward the camera and raises a sword as the Rogue Legacy 2 logo appears.
The handful of work-in-progress screenshots show a very familiar 2D action game set inside a castle, but the art is substantially more detailed than the original 2013 title. It looks like we’ll still get a selection of heirs on every new run, each with their own unique abilities. One of those powers now is a gravity beam with the power of “destroying everything”, so that’s new.
Check out the screens and video teaser below.

Cellar Door Games most recently released the co-op action-RPG Full Metal Furies in 2018. It was received well, but did not make the same impact as the original Rogue Legacy.
