Seagate’s new SSD boasts speeds of 10GB/s, making it the fastest solid state device ever

Full disclosure: this isn’t a piece of kit aimed at gamer, but rather an enterprise storage solution. However, Seagate’s PCIe x16-based, production-ready SSD design gives us an exciting look at drip-down tech that may be headed our way in the coming months and years. Slap it in your PCIe slot, and it can run at up to 10GB/s throughput.

The as-yet unnamed device is primarily aimed at data center and HPC usage, and utilises every one of the PCIe slot’s 16 lanes to hit that 10GB/s throughput. That’s 4GB/s quicker than the previous record holder, say Bit Tech. There’ll also be a PCI x8 variant capable of 6.7GB/s speeds, arriving at roughly the same time as its faster stablemate this summer.

Both will be compatible with any machine supporting the Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) interface, although Seagate have yet to announce capacity or pricing for either.

Last week, Samsung announced their new model of SSD with an enormous 15TB capacity – also intended for usage scenarios such as cloud storage and data centers. The specs are inflating rapidly at the top end of the SSD sector, and you can expect that to impact the enthusiast end of the market in the near future.
