Settle down: The Settlers return in Kingdoms of Anteria

The Settlers: Kingdoms of Anteria

Ubisoft and Blue Byte are dipping into the The Settlers franchise again, announcing Settlers: Kingdoms of Anteria, which will launch later this year.

Details are scarce, but Blue Byte’s Christopher Schmitz says the studio has reinvented its approach to the series. The teaser trailer doesn’t reveal much more, but implies a focus on adventurers or heroic units whose loot helps fund settlements.

“By reinventing our approach to the franchise, The Settlers: Kingdoms of Anteria offers players a brand new experience full of new possibilities to explore,” said Schmitz “Without a doubt, this is the most innovative Settlers’ game we have ever created.”

With Settlers Online still going on, I’m hopeful that we won’t be facing another fremium game. However, Blue Byte has been focusing on this market for a while, and I can’t help but see that purple gem the heroes toss the villager as some sort of premium currency.

It would be odd if there were two competing Settlers games though.

For me the series has gradually lost its appeal as it has progressed. Playing the original and Settlers 2 on the Amiga was a fascinating game of interlocking systems, but as they became more complex and combat orientated they felt as thought the balancing became increasingly abstract. It's never quite grabbed me since.

Certainly didn't get that good old Settlers-feeling from this trailer. The comment that they've tried yet again to "reinvent their approach to the franchise" makes me think they're just making yet another social online thing and are slapping the Settlers-name on it. We'll see, I suppose.

As a funny coincidence I was playing the original Settlers on FS-UAE today. I still get totally hooked on it whenever I start playing, in my book it's one of the best games ever made.
