Soma

‘Tis the season to be jolly, not to be scared our of your wits and mind, but let’s ignore that for now. The reason being that, as part of its Winter Sale, GOG is offering you the first-person horror game Soma for free. Yep, free as in no money, nada, zero pounds and zero pennies. So, please, put your wallet away.

You can pick it up over on GOG.com right now until December 30, 11:00 GMT / 03:00 PST. All you have to do is click the ‘Get it FREE’ button in the banner on GOG’s main page. Do that and you’ll get it added to your GOG account. Voila and all that.

Soma is the latest game from Frictional Games, which is a studio you may know as being the developer of Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Penumbra series. The studio has built a reputation for creating some of the scariest horror games ever. Soma takes many elements from Amnesia, such as sneakily dodging monsters in the dark and physics-based puzzle solving, but adds to it a sci-fi story about what it means to be human.

If you grab Soma for free and find it a bit too unnerving as you start playing it then the good news is that it recently got a safe mode that removes the monsters so you can focus on enjoying the worldbuilding and storytelling.

Given that Frictional Games have two new games currently in production this is a good chance to get caught up with the studio’s work. One of those news games is a horror game, naturally.
