Star Wars Battlefront Review

On a scale of Episode 1=terrible and Episode 5=good, where does Star Wars Battlefront stand?

You don't do Episode 1 justice by comparing it to Battlefront.

Love it, over 60 hours in and can't wait for more

How active is the multiplayer community for Star Wars Battlefront?

There won't be any community anymore soon...

The unofficial numbers suggest that it's not as active on PC as it is on Xbox One or PS4, yet still busy enough so that the matchmaking will set you up with a game almost instantly.

If you join a quick match, you'll be playing instantly. There's quite a bit of waiting, though, for the smaller game modes.

Would you buy at full price or wait for a Star Wars Battlefront sale?

For a purely multiplayer game with an expensive season pass, Battlefront is probably not something you'll want to buy at full price. Better to wait for a sale, or at least to see if the DLC is worth picking up as well.

Wait. It's extremely expensive and what you get for the base package without the season price is too small. EA regularly discount their games: don't be afraid to wait. You're not missing much by getting in early.

Either you buy at full price and have full servers - or you wait for a sale with nobody left to play.

How much fun are the weapons in Star Wars Battlefront?

They're interesting, because they're not the physical projectiles you're used to from playing Battlefield. Generally, their first shot is very accurate, and they spread wildly.

They're also counter-intuitive: zooming has no real impact on how accurate the shots are, nor does hip-firing.

What that means is, even though they look and sound brilliant, they lack the kind of nuance and long term learning that you'd expect from a DICE FPS.

They feel like they should. Spread rather than recoil, because they are laser-based rather than projectile, and varied enough so that unlocking a new weapon changes how you fight. They are all authentically Star Wars, as well, from the sound of laser fire to the detailed models. It's as close as you'll come to firing a real blaster.

How good are the graphics in Star Wars Battlefront?

Battlefront is beautiful, even on lower settings. Maps are richly detailed, even desolate Tatooine and Hoth, and character models are both realistic and appropriately Star Wars-y. Explosions in particular look great, as if they were ripped right out of the movies.

How good are the sounds in Star Wars Battlefront?

Probably the game's crowning achievement. Close your eyes, and you're in the films. The music, blaster fire, shouting Stormtroopers and Rebel scum -- it's perfect. This is DICE's impressive sound design firing on all cylinders, making Battlefront the most authentic Star Wars game I've ever played.

How does Star Wars Battlefront run on your PC?

Incredibly well, which is a surprise given the mess that Battlefield 4 was in for a long time after launch. I've encountered no problems, and with a decent GPU like a 970, you'll be able to get a consistent frame rate of 60 at 1080p. And I've yet to encounter bugs, lag or any other issues that might ruin the online experience.
