Starpoint Gemini Warlords Review

How open is Starpoint Gemini Warlords to explore?

Tanvaras, Space Pirate! (after 9 days 8 hours play time)

SPG Warlords is very open from the very instant of starting your new game, your able to go anywhere you like, though I recommend getting a few levels and equipment before venturing to far, its a big nasty galaxy out there.

Totally open and huuuuuuuge!
And new content is coming in every update.

You can explore it all you want, there are no restrictions. You can get killed though.

2

It is very open big universe, but lacks some content in alpha version

You're not limited in any way. That gives you freedom but stay clear of enemy regions.

How complex is Starpoint Gemini Warlords to learn?

2
Tanvaras, Space Pirate! (after 9 days 8 hours play time)

Game is simple to play, and moderate to master. Controls work well once you play for a little while. Due to having multiple modes of viewing, its best to find what view is best for you (Turret mode seems to be the best for myself) and once muscle memory learns, the game is very easy to play very well.

2
BackstabberDC (after 8 days 8 hours play time)

Much easier then previous title. This has hand holding tutorial and it's realtively simple. Mastering the game is another thing. :-)

2

Pretty much, but I have experience from before game so it is easier

1
Conan_the_King (after 2 days 4 hours play time)

Not at all if you polayed previous games.
If you're a newcomer, tutorial is simple enough.

How realistic is Starpoint Gemini Warlords?

2
Tanvaras, Space Pirate! (after 9 days 8 hours play time)

It's a space game in a distant galaxy far far away...ok you get the point, its not realistic since we dont have battleship star cruisers to compare the game to just yet.

2

It is somewhere between realism and fun. For me it is good line

2
BackstabberDC (after 8 days 8 hours play time)

It's not a documentary on NASA and SpaceX. It's more one the arcade side in terms of physics, but it's tactical in terms of combat.

1
Conan_the_King (after 2 days 4 hours play time)

It's in the middle between simulator and fun. :D

How well does Starpoint Gemini Warlords let you develop your character?

2
Tanvaras, Space Pirate! (after 9 days 8 hours play time)

Quite well, Warlords has quite abit of RPG elements, skill points and perk points for your character to tailor them to how you want to play. These skills and perks are still being fleshed out whilst in Early Access with community input.

2
BackstabberDC (after 8 days 8 hours play time)

It's in alpha at this point so many things are subject to change.
You level up your character, you will be able to choose your class, you will have companions that are leveling with you, new skills sytem is coming in the update, perks were redesigned. I would say that RPG aspect is covered quite well.

2

If you take your flagship and consider it your avatar, it is good. Characters themselves level up in abilities and stats

1
Conan_the_King (after 2 days 4 hours play time)

Not much at the moment, but it will in the later EA stages, just like SPG2.

Have you come up with any clever strategies in Starpoint Gemini Warlords?

2
BackstabberDC (after 8 days 8 hours play time)

Not personally but I've seen people on forums and YouTube share their strategies which was awesome since I tried them and it works.

How active is the Starpoint Gemini Warlords mod scene?

2
Tanvaras, Space Pirate! (after 9 days 8 hours play time)

Mod scene is not really up and running yet due to the game being in Early Access but if SPG 2 mod scene is anything to go by, it will be huge!

2

Official mods are not yet supported. It is announced for November. But it is not hard to modify many base files already

2
BackstabberDC (after 8 days 8 hours play time)

Starpoint Gemini 2 had very active mod scene so I guess Warlords will be even bigger and better when they implement Workshop support. I'm not worried based on what I saw in previous game.

1
Conan_the_King (after 2 days 4 hours play time)

Considering Workshop is not implemented yet, I would say very active. Many players are already asking about moding tutorials and advices.

Should you buy Starpoint Gemini Warlords now or wait for it to come out of Early Access?

2

I am very careful about alpha and beta games today. However, this team already delivered and delivered good so I would recommend definitely to space gamers

2
Tanvaras, Space Pirate! (after 9 days 8 hours play time)

SPG Warlords is priced quite well at this moment on Early Access and is worth the admission price, and shall only get a little more dearer as it goes into Beta and then Live. If space gaming is your thing, jumping on board now is the time to do it.

2
BackstabberDC (after 8 days 8 hours play time)

Buying it now has several pros and cons. IMHO, pros > cons.

Pros:
+ Lower price
+ Showing support to dev team
+ Option to directly help with development (dev team talks to people all the time)

Cons:
- Unfinished game (you can always get it for low price now and leave it till release)
- Bugs

Now. Support this team and watch the miracle birth of a new space game .

How good are Little Green Men Games at releasing regular updates?

2
BackstabberDC (after 8 days 8 hours play time)

They are all about updates and transparency. During SPG 2 time, they released like 100 updates during and even post release of the game. Heck, even now they're still updating Starpoint Gemini 2 and they didn't abandon the project. So they are very good at releasing updates!!!

2
Tanvaras, Space Pirate! (after 9 days 8 hours play time)

Excellent, updates come at a good pace, and the Dev Team are always communicating each and every day on the forums with the community.

2

Very good. Many updates and many new content

2
Tanvaras, Space Pirate! (after 9 days 8 hours play time)

Curently I can not since Modding really has not started just yet, but its coming!

2
BackstabberDC (after 8 days 8 hours play time)

Not yet, but ask me again when they implement Workshop support. :-)

How much freedom does Starpoint Gemini Warlords give you?

2
Tanvaras, Space Pirate! (after 9 days 8 hours play time)

Warlords gives freedom by the bucket load, game is one giant galaxy sandbox (campaign continues into sandbox).

2
BackstabberDC (after 8 days 8 hours play time)

Total freedom in terms of exploring, killing, mining, trading. You can do what you want, but if you kill allies, you will piss them off and have half of the galaxy on your tail in no time.

2

A lot but many things are still missing in alpha

1
Conan_the_King (after 2 days 4 hours play time)

As much as you are willing to take.

Does the setting of Starpoint Gemini Warlords feel original?

2
Tanvaras, Space Pirate! (after 9 days 8 hours play time)

Very original, SPG has 3 games in its series now all in the same galaxy with their storylines continuing along. The game is LGM's own setting, which has quite a lot of lore now and very enjoyable to find out about.

2
BackstabberDC (after 8 days 8 hours play time)

Yes, they added something that is unique to their games and that's tactical combat system they use and I've never seen in other games, but at the same time it feels familiar and brings back those Freelancer moments. So I would say best of both worlds. Warlords will have similarities to Mount & Blade Warband too because of new expansion features.

2

No more or less than most space games. It is a cool setting

1
Conan_the_King (after 2 days 4 hours play time)

Yes. It might be in space, but it's unlike every game I've seen so far. It's not Rebel Galaxy, Stellaris, Elite Dangerous or Eve Online. Then again, it has something from all of them, while still keeping it's original combat system and nobody can compare it to anything except previous Starpoint Gemini games.

How good are the graphics in Starpoint Gemini Warlords?

2
Tanvaras, Space Pirate! (after 9 days 8 hours play time)

Warlords GFX are beautiful, Something I have really appreciated with the SPG series. LGM sure done their best and it shows, Skyboxes are excellent, Ships look awesome, Explosions are great, Asteroid/junk fields look brilliant.

2

Very nice and atmospheric

How good are the sounds in Starpoint Gemini Warlords?

2
Tanvaras, Space Pirate! (after 9 days 8 hours play time)

Music in game is truly amazing, kudos to the composer. Weapons fire is spot on, Voice acting needs work which shall be looked at as the game goes through Early Access.

2
BackstabberDC (after 8 days 8 hours play time)

Aside from voiceovers that will be replaced, music is chillout, ambiental space music similar to EVE Online and sounds are getting better every update. I think sounds were placeholders from previous game that are now getting replaced with new and better sounds.

2

Pretty good. VO is not so good, but devs say it will be replaced

1
Conan_the_King (after 2 days 4 hours play time)

Very good. Voice overs not so much, but devs decided to replace them because we were complaining on forums.

How does Starpoint Gemini Warlords run on your PC?

2
Tanvaras, Space Pirate! (after 9 days 8 hours play time)

At current build game is running very well, Frame rates are always very good and have not had a game breaking issue in a long time - QA do their job very well proir to update release!

2

average is 40 FPS. Very good for alpha game

2
BackstabberDC (after 8 days 8 hours play time)

No problems, it's running on ultra details in average 45-50 FPS. And we're talking about alpha, non-optimized version of the game so I'm sure it will run better on release.

1
Conan_the_King (after 2 days 4 hours play time)

On a bit older machine, everything runs smoothly in High details.
