Today, Otherside Entertainment announced that Warren Spector has joined their team as a studio director. Most importantly, this means he’ll lead the team developing System Shock 3 later this year.

Love the classics? Our list of best PC games is full of ‘em.

Spector, for those of you who’ve been living under a rock for the past two decades or so, played a huge part in introducing the world to classics such as Deux Ex and the original System Shock. He has also acted as a creatvie advisor to Otherside since the studio was founded.

Currently, the developers are hard at work on Underworld Ascendant – a spiritual successor to Ultima Underworld, another time-honoured game Spector was heavily involved in – which Spector will “continue to help in a creative capacity”. Over the last while, Spector has been teaching film classes at the University of Texas at Austin, however will join Otherside at the end of the current semester and will lead development on System Shock 3 in a new “expanded role”.

“I’ve loved working with students as Director of the Denius-Sams Gaming Academy in the University of Texas’ Moody College of Communication,” says Spector in a press release. “But when the opportunity to have a bigger role in bringing Underworld Ascendant to life, as well as playing in the System Shock universe once again, helping to bring these games to a 21st century audience, I just couldn’t say no.

“Working on System Shock was one of the most fulfilling things I’ve done in my career and it’s hard to describe how much I’m looking forward to sharing with players what SHODAN has been up to since the last game was released.”

As we learned last year, System Shock 3 may have a VR component.
