The Long Dark gets a story mode, lots of sad survival choices to make

The Long Dark Story Mode reveal

Early Access, first-person, post-apocalyptic, open-world, survival-simulator isn’t a list of gaming buzzwords, it’s The Long Dark in a nutshell. And pretty soon we’ll be able to add ‘narrative-driven’ to that list, thanks to Hinterland Studio’s newly unveiled story mode for The Long Dark, which comes courtesy of a brief and bleak trailer featuring loads of sad stuff.

The successfully Kickstarted survival game is currently out on Steam Early Access – where it has received glowing reviews – in the form of a sandbox survival experience. But developers Hinterland Studio have decided to go one step further by giving the game a fully-fledged, episodic story mode with the first 2-3 hour instalment arriving Spring 2016.

Hinterland Studio are promising a “Rich episodic fiction featuring dozens of locations, a cast of memorable characters, and a mature post-disaster storyline inspired by the creative risk-taking seen in many of today’s exciting television series.”

Players will take control of pilot Will Mackenzie and Dr. Astrid Greenwood, switching characters as the story progresses. The Story Mode will also add a number of new areas to the game, while also featuring a checkpoint system rather than the current permadeath mechanic.

Thanks, IGN.
