Total War: Warhammer 2’s full roster hasn’t yet been “ratified” (the Skaven are coming)

Total War: Warhammer 2

Update June 2, 2017: Those man-murdering rats are definitely coming to Total War: Warhammer 2, in case it wasn’t obvious from that video tease above.

A preview embargo for the game just passed, so a bunch of new information has been released into the wild. For a start, a new free-for-all multiplayer mode has been confirmed.

Here’s everything we know about Total War: Warhammer 2

Elsewhere, in the dark corners of the internet (Reddit), one Creative Assembly representative just dropped another hint that the Skaven are coming. When asked if they could confirm the existence of the giant rats, they simply replied: “The full rosters haven’t yet been… ratified.”

Cheeky.

Original Story April 21, 2017: Did you watch Total War: Warhammer 2’s cinematic trailer recently? Did you see the rat at the end? Well, according to game director Ian Roxburgh, “it’s just a rat.” Totally not a hint that the Skaven are coming, no sir. Just an innocuous, pointless, evil rat that serves no purpose at all, but they rendered it anyway. Okay? Okay.

Outside of cheeky Skaven teases, the new trailer commentary embedded above does provide a fair bit of insight, pointing out the elite units and giving us the lowdown on the Great Vortex mechanic.

The latter provides the game with a narrative thread and a new victory condition, but it’s completely optional if you want to win by more traditional means: murdering everyone.

Some races want to keep up the status quo, stopping the Vortex from spinning out of control, while some want to destabilise it for no reason at all. It’s fantasy Brexit, basically. Honestly, even the official YouTube descriptions says it’s “a struggle culminating in a cataclysmic endgame.”

Total War: Warhammer 2 is out some time this year.
