Warcraft movie dated for a Christmas in the not too distant future

Blizzard and Legendary Pictures’ long-in-gestation Warcraft adaptation will arrive in cinemas on December 18, 2015 – just in time to compete for ticket stubs with Tom Hanks’ take on Dan Brown’s Inferno.

The date was tweeted from the official Warcraft account late last night, and at first pass sounds like the far flung future – until you remember that filming is still yet to start in January. With that in mind, and what’s likely to be a hefty amount of CG to fiddle with in post-production, it seems a quite reasonable bit of scheduling.

If anybody’s likely to put together a representative and satisfying tale in the Warcraft universe between now and then, it’s director Duncan Jones. Jones has spent the last half decade making his name as a purveyor of great sci-fi, first with Moon, then with Source Code.

He has a proven writer in Blood Diamond scribbler Charles Leavitt, and maybe a lead in Colin Farrell? It’s difficult to know for sure. These Hollywood types are so changeable.

What kind of story do you think Blizzard want told in Azeroth? Remember: it’s them who have right of veto over the whole affair.
