Assassin’s Creed Odyssey story details leak ahead of Ubisoft conference

Details about Assassin’s Creed Odyssey have leaked on the PlayStation Store. The leak reveals new information about the game’s story and setting, confirming that your character is a Spartan warrior.

The description, which was posted to Reddit, reads “take control of your destiny and write your own epic odyssey as you journey to become a legendary Spartan hero. Live incredible adventures in a world where every choice matters. Rejected by your family, you must embark on an adventure from outcast mercenary to legendary Spartan hero to uncover the truth about your past.”

Ahead of the next batch of E3 conferences, why not check out our list of upcoming games?

That actually tells us quite a lot, especially for a relatively small description. For one thing, it confirms that you’ll be playing as a Spartan. That in itself offers some form of information about when the game could be set. Sparta was founded around 900 BC, and continued to exist for a long time, eventually being annexed around 200 BC. That probably puts paid to the theories that suggest the story of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey will coincide with the events of Assassin’s Creed Origins, which was set around 50 BC. To hit the most popular reimaginings of Spartan history, the Battle of Thermopylae and the Peloponnesian War, Ubisoft would have to be aiming for the fifth century BC, well before Bayek and co were even born.

The description also makes no mention of the assassins themselves. Bayek is supposed to be the founding member of the order, but if his great-great grandparents are yet to be born, even if we assume that Odyssey is set towards the end of the Spartan timeline, it’s very possible that Ubisoft’s next game is more of a spin-off than a full entry. That would potentially explain the return to what appears to be a yearly release schedule, as it would be much easier to create a new experience attached to Origins’ world in a year than putting out a brand new game.

The suggestion that you’ll play “in a world where every choice matters” is also interesting, as it suggests an even closer RPG style than Origins offered. You can read the full description, which is under something titled Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Game Release, on Reddit. Even that’s interesting, as it gives us a date and time of between 15:00 on Monday, June 11 and 16:00 on Monday, June 18. The start of that would coincide with central US time zones for the Ubisoft conference, potentially suggesting some sort of playable demo, although that’s pure speculation. Expect to find out more on Monday afternoon.
