Assassin’s Creed Origins’ new free update adds a Final Fantasy quest and chocobo mount

I need to make clear that this is not a mod. The features I’m about to detail may seem like something you’d dig up on the stranger portions of the Steam Workshop, where copyright ‘laws’ become copyright ‘suggestions.’ But no, this is an official crossover between Assassin’s Creed Origins and Final Fantasy XV, and I’m cackling with glee here at the thought of lawyers finalizing an agreement about “chocobo camels.”

This all comes in the form of a brief new quest and its associated rewards. If you head to the Giza region following the game’s latest update, you’ll get a quest marker pointing to your objective. If you want to just see what happens for yourself in-game, that’s all you really need to know – it’s a free update for everyone.

If you want some more immediate gratification, however, here’s what happens. Digging through a few puzzles leads you to the interior of a small pyramid, and once inside Bayek activates a techno-magical portal. Out pops FF15 antagonist Ardyn, then series summon mainstay Bahamut shows up, does an apocalyptic sword dance, and they both vanish to the realm from whence they came.

They leave behind the Ultima Blade, the Ziedrich shield, and the Kweh mount, all of which are immediately equippable. Our buddy Kweh is a four-legged chocobo, which I’m pretty sure breaks the established canon of both Assassin’s Creed and Final Fantasy. But hey, Origins has embraced some over-the-top content for its updates including boss fights against ancient gods, so Kweh here will probably fit right in.
