Dragon’s Dogma 2 romance explained

Dragon’s Dogma 2 romance allows you to connect with its vast array of NPCs in a way that throwing them off a cliff can’t compete with.

Can you romance a character in Dragon’s Dogma 2? DD2 plays pretty loosey-goosey with its NPCs; as far as videogames go, they’re well-rounded individuals who have schedules, their own needs, and whenever our Arisen is nearby, short life expectancies. You can connect with them on a deeper level, though, if that’s what you want, which is where romance comes in.

The cast of Dragon’s Dogma 2 characters is varied, to say the least, and, as it turns out, you’re able to gain the affection of pretty much anyone in the RPG game so long as you have what they desire. Part of becoming an Arisen is having your heart taken, and with Dragon’s Dogma 2 romance, you can turn the tides and steal someone else’s.

How to romance in Dragon’s Dogma 2

To stand a chance at winning someone’s affection in Dragon’s Dogma 2, you must raise your affinity level with them. This is basically how much that particular NPC likes you, and, like many things in life, this can be achieved by giving them nice gifts.

To give an NPC a gift, talk to them and press the button prompt on the screen marked ‘Give Gift’ – this is the X button if you’re using a gamepad. Once you’ve initiated the gift-giving procedure, your inventory will open, showing all of the items eligible for gifting.

NPCs don’t like everything, mind you, and you’ll have to do a little bit of research into the person to figure out what could make for a decent gift. By going into the History section of the main menu, then NPC Logbook, you can scroll through each of the characters and see their likes from their profile. These likes can range from expensive things to beautiful things, and it’s from there you need to decipher what they’ll appreciate. Can’t go far wrong with a bunch of flowers, though.

Once your affinity with an NPC has grown, they may ask you to accompany them somewhere. This acts as your basic escort mission, with a basic escort mission’s pitfalls – the NPC can and will be attacked at random while on the road, and it’s up to you to protect them (or use a Wakestone if they happen to fall). If you have the destination unlocked already and have the means to Dragon’s Dogma 2 Ferrystone there, this will transport the NPC alongside you so that’s a little shortcut.

Once you reach a high enough affinity with an NPC, you’ll notice that they blush whenever talking to you, and if they happen to be a vendor, you might even get a little discount whenever you shop at their store. The perks of being a heartthrob, I suppose.

Can you have sex in Dragon’s Dogma 2?

Erm, kind of, but not really. There is a brothel in Vernworth, and you can pay one of the NPCs there for their time. But the resulting cutscene appears to be nothing more than you both standing there in your unmentionables. Whether that’s worth the 20,000 gold pieces is up to you. Alternatively, there are some slightly more intimate cutscenes to be had with Wilhemina and Ulrika, if you follow their individual questlines and ply them with gifts.
