FF7 Rebirth PC release date estimate, story, and more

We’re going to have to wait for the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth release date as the PlayStation 5 enjoys its short console exclusivity period.

What is the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth PC release date? We all knew it was going to be a difficult task for Square Enix to remake Final Fantasy 7, and now we’re just over halfway there, as Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth marks the second entry in the trilogy.

While the series is known for its PlayStation roots, the first entry in the RPG game trilogy did make its way onto PC shortly after launch. Originally released back in 1997, the retro game’s story is ingrained in videogame history. If you haven’t played Final Fantasy 7, the devs have made some key changes to the story to make things exciting for returning players. Here’s what you need to know about the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth release date, story, gameplay, and more.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth PC release date estimate

The earliest Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth can launch on PC is on Wednesday, May 29, 2024. This was confirmed in a Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth release date announcement trailer; the game has timed exclusivity on PlayStation 5 for three months.

There’s no telling whether the FF7 Rebirth PC release date will happen immediately after the console exclusivity period ends, however, we expect some time to pass before it arrives on PC. Final Fantasy 7 Remake was also exclusive to PlayStation 4 for a while, but Square Enix waited until they finished development on Remake Intergrade before launching the game on PC and PlayStation 5.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade featured an extra story arc where players take control of the Wutaian ninja, Yuffie Kisaragi. There’s a chance Rebirth could receive the same treatment, launching the game at a later date with more story content. Intergrade launched just over one year after Remake, so we expect a potential Rebirth Intergrade to launch around April 2025. It’s also unclear whether the game is going to be exclusive to the Epic Game Store like Remake was, but we’ll know closer to the release date.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth PC gameplay

You can expect a lot of the gameplay mechanics in Rebirth to be similar to Remake. That said, the game does make use of the PlayStation 5’s graphics power and its high-speed solid-state drive, introducing virtually no loading screens when exploring the open world.

Odd Jobs return in Rebirth, giving players a chance to learn more about the citizens in each of the regions and to strengthen the bond between Cloud and his friends. Not only are minigames coming back, but some of them are receiving enhancements compared to the original game. There’s even a new card game called Queen’s Blood — players can build a basic deck and improve it by finding new cards throughout the game.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth PC story

Rebirth begins with Cloud and his friends escaping Midgar as they continue their search to find Sephiroth and take him down. Though it was destined for Cloud and his team to fail, they managed to achieve the impossible. Without spoiling the main events of Remake, the main point to be aware of is that Sephiroth has revealed his plan to take over the world.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth PC world map and regions

With Cloud finally out of Midgard, players can explore all the regions that make up the map. In the Rebirth State of Play video, we got a glimpse of the world map, along with seven of the regions that are seamlessly interconnected.

Here are the regions we know about in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth:

  • Grasslands: South of Midgar, players begin their adventure here.
  • Junon Region: Second only to Midgar in size thanks to investment from Shinra, this region serves as a transport hub for land, air, and sea traffic.
  • Corel Region: Home to the resort town of Costa del Sol, Corel is filled with vast deserts and large mountains. Explorers traveling outside the town can find the ruins of an old mako reactor and abandoned coal mines.
  • Gongaga Region: Hidden among the lush jungle is a small community that has managed to thrive in the humid climate.
  • Cosmo Canyon Region: Fly through the air using unique Chocobo and discover more about Red XIII’s roots.
  • Nibel Region: The home of Cloud and Tifa. Relive some childhood memories and take a trip back to Shinra Manor.
  • Meridian Ocean: Journey through the high seas on a boat.

To clear off the world map, you’re going to need to work with Chadley, an intern for Shinra’s Research and Development Division. This involves playing with Mooglets, wrangling Chocobos, and exploring lairs inhabited by foes to create materia.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth PC demo

Square Enix has not announced a Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth PC demo just yet, but there’s a good chance one will arrive when the game is officially announced on PC. The devs made a Rebirth demo for PS5 players, so there’s no reason to believe it won’t come to PC sometime in the future.

It’s also worth noting that Final Fantasy 7 Remake had a demo on PC, so we’re going to see this track record of demos as a positive thing. You get to test the game’s performance and experience a slice of the action, what’s not to love?

That’s all there is to know about the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth PC release date. Though Rebirth may be exclusive to the PlayStation 5, there’s going to be a lot more to look forward to regarding visual enhancements when the game finally arrives on PC.
