The company behind The Witcher series is making a Final Fantasy XIV show

Final Fantasy is going live-action

A Final Fantasy TV series is on the way. It’ll be set in the familiar world of Eorzea from Final Fantasy XIV, but will incorporate elements from across the series. It’s being produced by Hivemind Films, the production company behind the upcoming Amazon Prime season of The Expanse, and Netflix’s Witcher series.

Plot details are thin at the moment, but it will feature “the struggle between magic and technology in a quest to bring peace to a land in conflict,” as Hollywood Reporter details. It will also have airships, Chocobos, and a character named Cid – so at the very least, it checks the proper Final Fantasy boxes.

Jason F. Brown, Sean Daniel, and Dinesh Shamdasani will produce. Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton will serve as writers and executive producers. Hivemind has a “first look deal” with Amazon for TV projects, though as The Witcher demonstrates, the company has been working with Netflix, as well.

This isn’t the first time Eorzea has been featured in a TV show. Netflix’s Final Fantasy XIV: Dad of Light used the game itself as a backdrop for a story about familial connection, and it’s better than you’d think.

It’s still not quite the same thing as a proper FF series, though.

Final Fantasy has gotten side stories and sequels in film and TV before, though the last major original production – The Spirits Within – was such a notable mess that it nearly sank Square and forced the company to merge with its biggest competitor and become Square Enix. Things can only go up from there, right?
