Horde Bash update brings wave-based survival to Fortnite this week

Fortnite has been generating headlines for several weeks now with its PUBG-inspired Battle Royale mode, but let’s not forget that there is, you know, a whole ‘nother game there. Now it’s getting another new mode that has roots in an existing game, but this time it’s one Epic themselves made famous.

Check out our guide to Fortnite for more.

A horde mode is coming to Fornite, called Challenge the Horde. It is approximately the bajillionth iteration of the mode since it was popularized in Gears of War 2. Fortnite’s take on wave-based survival sees teams of up to four hit a staging area where they get unlimited time to deploy their resources in building a fort that’ll serve as a defensible area. Surviving means more resources and rewards to build more defenses – you know how this works.

The Horde Bash event also brings a new Scavenger Llama giving you access to four new heroes, nine weapons, and two defenders. You’ll earn currency to get the new stuff from playing Challenge the Horde and completing the 25 new progression quests.

Your potential new heroes include:

  • Raider Soldier – Loves the shotgun and close encounters.
  • Ammo Harvest Outlander – If you need ammo, this is your Hero.
  • Trap Specialist Constructor – Get a damage boost & durability boost.
  • Energy Thief Ninja – Generates and leeches energy from melee combat.

Horde Bash begins on Thursday, October 5, and though Epic have not announced when or if it will be ending, it does seem in line with the regular rotation of events. In other words, don’t expect the mode or its rewards to be around forever.

With or without the boost of Battle Royale, Fortnite has proven to be quite successful, and the continued addition of new content should help as it motors through Early Access toward its free-to-play release.
