Gears Tactics is an XCOM-like turn-based strategy game

No need to get too worked up about the Gears Pop announcement – Coalition has announced both Gears Tactics and Gears 5 at the Microsoft E3 2018 press conference. We were hoping for some kind of Gears news, so three new games is a pleasant surprise.

Gears Tactics is currently in pre-alpha and looks like a Gears of War take on the turn-based strategy gameplay of the recent XCOM games. Unlike XCOM, however, Gears Tactics will also include massive boss battles on a scale that we don’t often see in turn-based strategy games. Oh, and it’s got the Lancer chainsaw bayonet, which infinitely improves any gaming experience.

There are a few extra details such as the events of Gears Tactics taking place 12 years before Gears of War 1. Naturally, that also means we’ll be controlling an entirely new squad of inexplicably wide soldiers. We can expect plenty more details and gameplay over the coming months when all this E3 malarky dies down a bit.

Interestingly, there was also a Kinect game called Gears of War: Tactics, which went quiet a few years ago, so this is likely the result of that project.

Above is the full Gears reveal – you can find Gears Tactics roughly halfway through the video. It’s a short and sweet look at what could a brilliant new direction for the tactical shooter.
