Numerous companies in the game industry have issued statements and made donations in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Minecraft developer Mojang is the latest to announce its intentions, and it’s making a notable donation – for one day, all profits from sales of Minecraft are going to support the Black Lives Matter cause.
“In commemoration of Juneteenth, on Friday, June 19, 2020,” a tweet from the official Minecraft account explains, “we will donate all profits from that day’s sales of Minecraft, Minecraft Dungeons, and content in the Minecraft Marketplace to the following organisations: Black Lives Matter Foundation, Equal Justice Initiative, and the NAACP Legal Defense & Education Fund.”
Minecraft’s sales are astronomical – over 200 million at this point as of just a few weeks ago – and it’s still selling tens of millions of copies every year. A day’s sales of the game – plus its marketplace microtransactions and its new spin-off, Minecraft Dungeons – is likely to constitute no small amount of money.
“We stand in unwavering support of the Black community, denouncing the racism, oppression, and suffering endured by so many for too long. As a team, we’ve been listening, learning, and considering how we can contribute to the powerful movements pushing for equality and justice in the US and around the world. Because Black lives matter.”
