Tim Willits already wants to make Rage 3

The post-apocalyptic FPS only just launched, but id's studio head says he wants a third game "as soon as possible"

Rage 3

Rage 2 might have only just released, but Tim Willits is already looking to expand on his post-apocalyptic open world. In a recent interview, studio director of developer id Software said that he’s hoping for a third Rage game.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Willits was asked whether he foresees future releases in the Rage franchise. In response, he said “I hope so. Yes, is the answer to that question. We’ve always loved this franchise because it’s such a fun setting. We can do what we want. It’s a crazy, fun, exciting franchise and I hope we can make a third one as soon as possible.”

Now, Willits is very clearly somewhat wedded to the Rage IP, and it’s no surprise that one of the lead developers of the game would be looking to follow it up with a sequel, but this is still a notable statement of intent. When you consider that this particular statement was made before the game was even out, it’s possible that conversations about a third Rage game could already be happening behind the scenes.

Whether or not a new game actually happens will likely come down to sales, and as yet, we don’t have a particularly clear idea of how well Rage 2 has done, although those details will likely come to light in the coming weeks. The game’s story has, unsurprisingly, been left open enough that a sequel isn’t an impossibility, but sadly that’s no guarantee of a new game.

Of course, if and when Willits ever finds out about the unflattering Rage 2 easter egg dedicated to him, he might just decide to pull the rug out from under the whole thing. Hopefully that won’t be the case, but either way, we probably won’t find out for a few years yet.
