What is the Rugrats Adventures in Gameland release date? If you’ve managed to get a look at some Rugrats Adventures in Gameland gameplay, your eyes aren’t deceiving you. The new Rugrats game can instantly switch from NES-like visuals to graphics that look just like the ‘90s cartoon. The developers at Wallride teamed up with The Mix Games to create a retro-style platformer that wouldn’t look out of place back on the NES.
In this platformer game, players take control of the Rugrats as they go on a journey inside Tommy Pickle’s house using the power of imagination. Inspired by classic NES titles, you can choose to go on this Rugrats adventure alone or as a pair thanks to the drop-in, drop-out co-op game mode. Here’s what we know about the Rugrats Adventures in Gameland release date, including details about the gameplay, trailers, and more.
Rugrats Adventures in Gameland release date window
Rugrats Adventures in Gameland will launch on PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch, and the NES in March 2024. An exact release date hasn’t been given, but a demo has been confirmed for Steam Next Fest in February.
Announced at the end of August 2023, the NES version was shown to the press for the first time. Judging by the amount of 8-bit gameplay we’ve seen so far, it appears the 8-bit style is being used to design the core game first. Unsurprisingly, the NES version cannot switch to the modern-day art style like the other games can.
Speaking of the NES version of Rugrats Adventures in Gameland, it can only be purchased through the Limited Run games website. The other versions of the game will be available through digital storefronts.
Rugrats Adventures in Gameland story
Though there’s a Rugrats reboot that debuted back in 2021, the devs have decided to base their game on the original ‘90s cartoon. Hardcore Rugrats fans from the early ‘90s may recognize that this game is set during the series’ early seasons before Tommy’s parents decided to have another baby.
The Rugrats spot a new Reptar dinosaur game advertisement on TV, so the kids take it upon themselves to pretend they’re in a videogame of their creation. As the game is based on the imagination of four babies, we’re going to assume there are plenty of wacky antics and mishaps to look forward to.
Rugrats Adventures in Gameland gameplay
There are four Rugrats to pick from, each with unique jump and lift stats to make them feel different: Tommy, Phil, Lil, and Chuckie. Based on the environments found around the Pickle’s residence, there are six levels to get through, with Reptar Coins scattered throughout each zone. Finding every coin unlocks the mysterious Reptar door, but it’s unclear exactly what lies behind these doors.
As mentioned earlier, there’s a co-op mode that lets two players tackle each area. Judging by the first trailer, it looks like there are bosses at the end of each level. For example, Lil is seen throwing junk towards a purple gorilla hanging from a tree. There are elements of iconic NES titles shown in the gameplay, perfect for fans of old-school platformers like Megaman and Ducktails.
Interestingly, while the game allows players to instantly switch between 8-bit and HD visuals, it appears action isn’t confined to a square when playing in widescreen mode. Some games with this feature force players to compromise, but it appears the devs have managed to create a workaround.
