Topic of the Week: Have you been hooked on a game that's made you unhappy?

Yesterday, I spotted a post on Reddit titled “I’m addicted to Dota 2 and it makes me unhappy”. The poster explains how the toxic environment of the massive MOBA makes him miserable and has negatively affected his life outside of the game, but that he’s still compelled to play it.

For our Topic of the Week, we want to know if you’ve ever found yourself in a similar situation. Not necessarily addicted, because it’s such a loaded term, but driven to play more despite how it sometimes makes you feel a little bit crap.

I’ll get the ball rolling.

I don’t have a high tolerance for crap. If a game is irritating me or the community is just utterly unpleasant, then I’m not going to stick around. I have, just on my personal Steam account, over 500 games, and over 2000 in a press account. There’s no dearth of games.

However, as I mentioned in an article I posted today on bloated open worlds, there are quite a few games that suck fun out of the proceedings with meaningless busywork, and I do sometimes find myself participating in these mundane tasks because of Pavlovian trickery, though I inevitably grow sick of it and move on.

Anyway, that’s enough from me. What about you lovely lot? Have you been hooked on a game that makes you unhappy? Let us know in the comments.
