Ultima spin-off successor Underworld Ascendant is on track for 2018

underworld ascendant release date

It’s been 25 years since Ultima Underworld II came out, and two-and-a-half decades are probably more than enough time to wait for a follow-up. Yet we won’t have to wait much longer, as Underworld Ascendant is still on track for release in 2018, and the developers have provided a new update on the game’s progress with just a taste of gameplay footage.

The former Looking Glass developers at Otherside Entertainment – including Paul Neurath and Warren Spector – discussed the game’s improvisational and emergent elements, and how it all fits into the legacy of the immersive sim as part of PAX South. The trailer above offers just a taste of where the game’s at these days.

Yes, it’s a tiny reveal, but the reminder Underworld Ascendant is coming along is certainly a worthwhile one. The game was Kickstarted way back in 2015, and we hadn’t heard a whole lot from OtherSide in the meantime – other than their announcement of System Shock 3. They’re doing what they can to keep immersive sims alive, it seems.

The Steam listing for Underworld Ascendant suggests you’ll be returning to The Stygian Abyss, with an array of magic, melee, and stealth skills to navigate your way through an epic story involving a selection of rival factions.
