It’s time to bid farewell to Geralt, but not The Witcher universe

The Witcher 3

I’ve grown rather fond of Geralt since he first wandered into a rather miserable village at the start of The Witcher. He’s a grumbling, pasty-faced killer with no real charisma, but I love the guy anyway. Lamentably, as CD Projekt Red announced last year, The Witcher 3 is going to be his final adventure.

Speaking with IGN, senior writer Jakub Szamałek explained why it was time to say cheerio to the gloomy monster hunter.

“I think good stories must have an ending,” Szamałek explained. “You cannot extend them indefinitely, and we felt that Geralt has had such an amazing adventure, and his saga is already so long and complex that this seemed like a good point to think about an appropriate finale for the story.“

Geralt’s going to be going out with a bang, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room to continue the story of the universe with other characters.

“The Witcher universe is a very big place with a lot of NPCs, a lot of characters, a lot of places we haven’t shown yet,” Szamałek said. “So, we might return to it at some point…but we think that this is a good place to let Geralt enjoy his retirement and try something new.”

Are there any characters you’d love to see as the protagonist of a future game set in the Witcher universe? Maybe a bawdy adventure with Dandelion as the hero? It could be a Guitar Hero-adventure game hybrid, maybe?

The Witcher 3 is tantalisingly close, and launches on May 19th.
