GOG adds Diablo’s Hellfire expansion for free

Diablo: Hellfire comes to GOG

Diablo: Hellfire is a semi-unofficial expansion for the original action-RPG, developed by Synergistic Software at the behest of publisher Sierra On-Line rather than Blizzard itself. The expansion was received well at the time, but Blizzard ignored its contents in every subsequent Diablo release and Hellfire has mostly been forgotten since – but today, it’s making a big comeback.

Hellfire has been added to the GOG version of Diablo as a free update available now. On the store page, GOG says “in response to Diablo players who have expressed a desire to experience the content, Blizzard has given the OK for it to be included as a free add-on with Diablo purchases on GOG.COM.”

Hellfire sends you after a new demon threat named Na-Krul – but it’s all non-canonical now, so that part doesn’t really matter. What does matter is the addition of a new Monk class (something Blizzard would later add to further Diablos), as well as new weapons, quests, dungeons, and plenty of fresh enemies to smite in defense of Tristram.

If you want to pick up the newly expanded release of Diablo, it’s currently available at a 10% discount on GOG as part of the site’s summer sale.

Assuming you’ve exhausted your time with Diablo 3, that’ll be your demon-hunting ARPG fix for now. We’re still awaiting both a Diablo 2 remaster and a Diablo 4 release date – both have seemed inevitable for years, and they have to happen eventually. (Right?)
