FFXIV’s Naoki Yoshida says he’d “drop everything” to work on Diablo 4

The game director says that his ideal crossovers would be with World of Warcraft and Diablo

Naoki Yoshida has made quite a name for himself over the past few years thanks to the success of Final Fantasy XIV. But apparently all that would mean nothing if a certain developer came knocking and asked for his help.

In an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine, the FFXIV producer and director joked that he’s quite the Diablo fanboy, and that “if Blizzard ever approached [me], you know, saying ‘Oh hey, we want you to take the reins to develop Diablo 4’, oh, I’m gonna drop everything I’m doing and I’m gonna go for it.”

While that might not be exactly the news that fans of the Final Fantasy series (or the FFXIV development team) would have hoped to hear, Yoshida says that there are other ways to indulge his soft spot for Blizzard’s games which wouldn’t involve upping sticks and moving to California. When asked what his dream crossover might be, Yoshida was quick to name both World of Warcraft and Diablo as ideal collaborations for his MMO.

FFXIV is no stranger to crossovers, thanks primarily to a partnership with its successor. Earlier this year, an event themed around Final Fantasy XV gave players access to a Regalia mount. The game’s latest expansion, Shadowbringers, also features a raid developed by Nier: Automata’s Yoko Taro.

Fortunately, Yoshida is unlikely to abandon Square Enix for Blizzard for the time being, as he’s already hard at work on Final Fantasy XIV’s next expansion. That’s not likely to release for a couple of years yet, but given that we don’t have any word on a Diablo 4 release date yet, who knows what the future could hold?
