It’s no secret that Guardians of the Galaxy actor and former professional wrestler Dave Bautista is quite keen on the idea of appearing in the upcoming Gears of War movie. He’s previously said that Marcus Fenix would be a “dream role” for him and that he’d been “pursuing Gears of War for years now”. However, despite his “badgering” of Universal Studios on the topic, it’s not looking likely that he’ll get to play the Gears hero.
The actor has posted an update on his prospects on Twitter (via GameSpot), saying “They’re listening. And they could give AF! But thank you for the support. Believe me when I say I’ve tried everything to make this happen.” His words followed a tweet from user Retro Rhino saying that fans “need” to see the Dave Bautista-Gears film collaboration happen, and asking if Hollywood was listening.
Sadly then, it looks like Bautista’s Marcus Fenix probably won’t be a thing in the upcoming movie. Despite this, it sounds like he had some pretty senior support from the team behind the games – Rod Fergusson from The Coalition said in June that “Dave is great. I think Dave would be awesome in that role. Unfortunately I don’t have casting control of what we do with that and whether we have the character that he would play”.
Whether the movie will even feature Marcus Fenix is still a bit of a mystery as details about the movie, which has been in development in one form or another for about 12 years, are pretty sparse.

The film seemingly got a new script writer in F. Scott Frazier last November but since, few solid details about the plot or characters have emerged.
While it looks like Dave Bautista probably won’t be playing Marcus Fenix in the film, there’s still plenty of Gears news to get excited for – Gears 5 is heading to our PCs later this year, and it looks like it’ll be the biggest Gears of War game yet.
