Hot on the heels of the Steam Winter sale, it looks like we know when the next round of discounts on the platform is due to kick off. The next sale on the Steam calendar coincides with the new Lunar Year, which in 2020 celebrates the Year of the Rat – and it starts later this month.
That’s according to a message posted on Reddit seemingly from Valve to developers (“partners”) announcing the Steam Lunar New Year Sale. The message says it starts January 23 and will run for five days, including over the Chinese New Year which this year falls on January 25. Last year’s sale dates were similarly leaked in a message to partners, though the 2019 sale started later in the year, running in early February instead.
There are no details just yet on which games will be discounted and by how much, but last year’s sale offered a wide range of games with reduced prices as well as an additional $5 off a $30 purchase and tokens for buying games. It’s far from confirmed, but perhaps we could see something similar this year.
Given the message reminds partners that they can’t offer discounts on games within 30 days of releasing them for the first time at full price, at the “end of [a] new release launch discount”, or a price increase, it looks likely that we won’t see brand new titles included in the discount.
When is the steam Lunar New Year Sale?
According to the message screenshot posted on Reddit, the Steam Lunar New Year Sale starts January 23 and runs through to January 27, so you’ll have the best part of a week to grab some sweet deals.
We’ll update this story when the Steam sale dates are confirmed and more details are revealed. In the meantime, check out our list of the best free Steam games available ahead of the Sale launch.
