Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’s revamped skill system completely changes combat

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey builds on the combat and skill trees present in Origins, but the next evolution of those systems ensures that they’ll be completely different from any previous game in the series.

Like in Origins, you can select new skills from across three different branches, favouring archery focused gameplay, stealthy assassinations, or more straightforward melee combat. But unlike the complex, webbed tree of the previous game, this is a much more straightforward progression, with clear distinctions between those branches. Still, you can spread your points across each specialisation, choosing where you want to focus your skills.

This is madness? No, this is our list of the biggest upcoming PC games. (It’s also Sparta, because Odyssey is there.)

But how you apply those skills in combat is where things really change, as Kotaku notes. You can now map moves to specific buttons, which you can use by spending a bit of an Origins-style adrenaline meter. This means you have far more options at your fingertips during battle, giving combat a much more varied feel.

The Assassin’s Creed Odyssey skill tree and abilities include plenty of fun new options, like the Spartan Kick – which is just as 300ish as you might imagine – and the option to tame knocked out wolves for a little four-legged backup in battle.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’s release date is coming up fast, currently set to bring your Grecian adventure fantasies to life this October.
