Borderlands 3’s Guardian ranks will provide a new form of post-game progression. Similar to Badass ranks, the new system was announced by creative director Paul Sage at E3 2019.
Those of you who have played Borderlands 2 will probably remember Badass ranks, which worked as an infinite progression system. Completing gameplay-related challenges throughout the world, like dealing shotgun damage or opening crates, awarded ‘Badass points’. Earning those let you gain Badass ranks, which could then be spent to add a percentage based bonus to stats like reload speed and damage dealt with grenades.
Speaking on stage at the PC Gaming Show, Sage explained the changes that Borderlands 3 will offer to that system. He said that developer Gearbox had “doubled down” on those ideas with Guardian Rank, which “not only has that infinite progression, but it has skills and different skins that you can unlock as you go through. And the cool thing about that is every character that you play on in that account gets the benefit of Guardian rank.”
The system has been around for a while, of course, and offers a low-impact way to keep those numbers ticking ever upwards, so it’s no great surprise that it’s making its way back to the game. I’m interested to see how the new version plays out.
Thankfully, it won’t be too long until we get to check it out for ourselves. The Borderlands 3 release date is only a few months away, so we’ll be heading back to Pandora very soon.
