Darksiders III is harnessing the power of cosplay to excite fans and newcomers

Fury

There’s a lot of tradition on display in what we’ve seen of Darksiders III so far, but THQ Nordic is trying out a modern method for building excitement for the game ahead of its release. They’ve just launched The Darksiders Legion, an online hub for Darksiders cosplay and fanart, and they’ve hired some professional talent to help seed the site.

Right now, The Legion has a few community spotlights that highlight some artists and costuming experts, plus links out to several cosplayers. Darksiders III’s protagonist Fury is portrayed by Vertvixen and Laura (of Lightning Cosplay), and Lightning Cosplay’s Ralf has done a pretty convincing Death.

It’s an interesting approach to pre-release hype building – on the one hand, it’s drawing fans in to help organize grassroots excitement for Darksiders III; on the other, it’s using free, voluntary contributions by fans in place of what might otherwise be done by paid artists. Ubisoft tread in somewhat similar waters not long ago with their plan to work with Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s company hitRECord to crowd-source art assets and music for Beyond Good & Evil 2.

Be that as it may,The Legionis primarily billing itself asa fan resource where long-time Darksiders fans can find and share costume ideas, watch Let’s Plays, connect with fellow enthusiasts, and provide feedback – it’s an official community site, after all, which is something you’ll find alongside any major franchise these days.

Darksiders III will be out later this year, and we’ll likely hear more about release date specifics at Gamescom in August.
