When you think of Capcom, you probably think of games like Street Fighter and Mega Man. Maybe Dead Rising and Resident Evil. Perhaps even Darkstalkers and Phoenix Wright. You probably don’t think of Dragon’s Dogma, and that’s a crying shame – but at least someone is recognising its brilliance, because Netflix is helping bring the game to life in an anime adaptation.
Netflix will partner with Japanese CG animation studio Sublimation to bring out Dragon’s Dogma, which the official press release describes as “an original anime series based on the critically acclaimed video game of the same name.” Sadly, it looks like we’re not getting any details beyond that just yet.
Representative director Atsushi Koishikawa says “Sublimation team has long dreamt of working on our own title. We have oftentimes worked with partner studios to create partial CGI portions within a given title, so we feel very fortunate to work with Netflix through this production line deal. We’re excited to bring our unique cel shaded animation that carries hand-drawn textures to anime fans around the world.”
Capcom properties have seen a lot of love with new adaptations lately – the producer of Netflix’s excellent Castlevania series picked up the rights to Devil May Cry, and a Monster Hunter movie is on the way. Some of those projects are, admittedly, more promising than others.
But somebody at Capcom remembers that Dragon’s Dogma exists, and that’s an incredible thing.

I was about to use the phrase “Capcom’s best game” in the headline for this article, but even I’m not willing to go that far. Yet the fantasy RPG stands apart from just about anything else that shares its genre, and if there’s any life left in the franchise I’m happy to hear about it.
