First The Witcher season two details emerge – here’s what we know so far

Netflix's The Witcher has been a huge success, and there's more on the way

Netflix’s The Witcher adaptation has been a huge success, and there’s a second season on the way. Now, showrunner Lauren S Hissrich has hinted at the plot for season two.

Responding to questions on Reddit, Hissrich tells fans of some of her plans for the season. “The story will be much more linear, now that the three characters’ stories have started to intersect”, she teases. Elsewhere she says “there’s a whole new set of fun characters coming in S2”.

The new season will also have “much shorter” scripts, meaning the team isn’t “having to cut down the product in editing as much”. Despite this, Hissrich says she is “approaching S2 in a similar way we did with S1”. She continues: “What are the stories [author of the Witcher books, Andrzej] Sapkowski was telling, and why? What building blocks do we need to set up future stories? Is there anything we missed from S1 that we want to include? And what will work on television? For instance, no one wants to see Triss have diarrhoea for three episodes. So what are we trying to glean from that in the books, and how do we present that onscreen?”

On the subject of Jaskier’s ageing process, Hissrich says: “We dropped the ball on ageing him up over the course of the show. It’s hard to show the passage of time when everyone looks the same, so we’ll be approaching that differently in S2.” And on the subject of Ciri flashback scenes? “We haven’t thought about Ciri flashbacks yet, but nothing is out of the question.”

Finally, Hissrich addresses a question about when we can expect The Witcher season two: “We don’t yet have a target launch date for S2, past 2021. We don’t want to rush the product. That doesn’t benefit anyone. And we decided to save some tidbits of witcher lore until… you actually meet more witchers.”

Netflix’s The Witcher adaptation has been a huge success since its release in December. As a result, we’ve heard plenty about the show over the past few weeks, including what the original season 1 ending would’ve looked like and why Ed Sheeran has been banned from participating in The Witcher. One of the best RPG games out there is getting a whole lot of fresh interest thanks to all this – as well as a whole bunch of new Witcher mods. The year 2021 can’t come soon enough.
