Assassin’s Creed Odyssey screenshots leak ahead of Ubisoft’s E3 event

A raft of screenshots from Assassin’s Creed Odyssey have leaked online, and they confirm much of what other leaks and bits of information have suggested about the upcoming game’s historical setting.

Gematsu reports that 17 screenshots were discovered on the servers of German site GamePro.de, but did not elaborate on how they were found. In any case, the screens are out in the wild now, and between the in-game visuals and information displayed in the heads-up display, they offer quite a bit of information about Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

It’s immediately apparent that Odyssey is going to have a naval emphasis. One shot shows the broad deck of a warship, with soldiers holding shields that bear an eagle and serpent device, while another shows the player character aboard a fishing boat similar to the ones available in Assassin’s Creed Origins.

The clearest indication of a seafaring focus, though, is a shot of the game’s map, which is centered on a chain of islands off Lakonia, the Greek region that was home to Sparta. That lines up with leaked Assassin’s Creed Odyssey story details we reported yesterday, which described the main character as an “outcast mercenary” on a journey to become a “legendary Spartan hero.”

On-screen text has quest instructions, some of which include “Destroy Athenian war supplies and weapons” and “Destroy Athenian ships.” That further supports the idea that Odyssey is set during the Peloponnesian War fought between Athens and Sparta in the Fifth Century B.C.

A shot of the skill tree displays information about “Rush Assassination.” Its description says it allows you to launch the “Spear of Leonidas” at a distant enemy to deal Assassin damage. Leonidas, of course, is the Spartan hero whose actions at Thermopylae became the stuff of myth and legend.

Finally, another interesting detail is that a couple screens seem to show dialogue choices for the main character, which would be a first for the long-running series.

All this amounts to a pretty clear idea of what Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is going to be: A Black-Flag-esque spinoff story set around 430 BC during the war between Athens and Sparta. That definitely precludes Origins’ Bayek or Aya from showing up in Odyssey.

We’ll find out whatever is left to reveal about Odyssey during Ubisoft’s press event, which is scheduled for Monday at 13:00 PT.
