Genshin Impact 2.4 drops next week, with new “secret-shrouded” area Enkanomiya

The next big update for Genshin Impact arrives on January 5, with new characters, a new area, and the Lantern Rite festival in tow

The holiday season might be in full swing, but Genshin Impact developer Mihoyo has been busy unveiling all that’s to come to the action-RPG with its next big update. The Genshin Impact 2.4 release date has been confirmed as January 5, and we now know a new area called Enkanomiya, new characters Shenhe and Yun Jin, and the Lantern Rite festival are on the way.

Enkanomiya sounds like a pretty spooky new area to explore, being the remains of an ancient underwater nation buried underwater and sealed away under Inazuma for thousands of years. It’s a huge floating island found under the ocean which is constantly being eroded by the Abyss and now lies in ruins, once home to the ancestors of the Watatsumi Island’s people.

You’ll find that there’s no day or night down in Enkanomiya – instead, you’ll have to find a way to an ancient ‘sun’ created by the people who once lived there called the Dainichi Mikoshi, while diving into puzzles and the new area’s secrets. There are also tricky new enemies in Bathysmal Vishaps – cunning foes that can team up and “take advantage of their surroundings”, as Mihoyo explains in a press release – and The Abyss Lector: Fathomless Flames. This enemy can dish out pyro attacks with delayed bursts of damage that can ignore characters’ shields.

As for the new characters joining Genshin Impact with 2.4, we’ve got the five-star Shenhe, who’s a polearm user who both wields cryo power and increases the cryo damage her teammates dish out. She’s also got an elemental skill that lets her boost nearby pals’ own elemental skill or burst damage, or their normal, plunging, and charged attack damage.

Yun Jin, meanwhile, is a four-star polearm user who has a geo vision, which lets her “buff her teammates’ normal attacks based on her defence and the variety of visions in the player’s party”. The coming update will also mark the opportunity for players to have another go at recruiting characters Xiao, Ganyu, and Zhongli in their own event wishes.

To usher in the new year, we’ll see the Lantern Rite go live with 2.4. Liyue Harbour will be packed to the brim with stalls, games, vendors, and other festivities for the in-game festival, with rewards on offer including ten intertwined fates, a chance at nabbing one of the eight free four-star Liyue characters, and a new outfit for Ningguang called Orchid’s evening gown. The event will this year also give players the opportunity to help Ningguang and some locals rebuild the Jade Chamber.

Genshin Impact update 2.4 goes live on January 5, 2022.
